California will choose a new governor in November to replace Gavin Newsom, who terms out after this year.
Voters will decide between Democrat Xavier Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton, who both advanced to the general election after a wild primary.
Hilton was a conservative commentator with a show on Fox News for six years and also worked as an adviser to former British prime minister David Cameron. He recently joined NBC Bay Area for a wide-ranging discussion about his gubernatorial campaign, political philosophy and policy proposals. Watch the full one-on-one interview with Raj Mathai in the video above.
Becerra has served as former President Joe Biden’s top health official and oversaw the response to the coronavirus pandemic. He was also the California’s attorney general during President Donald Trump’s first term and has more than two decades of experience as a congressmember.
NBC Bay Area reached out to Becerra multiple times for an interview and his campaign denied the requests.
Since winning the primary, Becerra has kept a relatively low profile and has held a handful of public events, including an appearance in September at a rally in support of Proposition 1.
Becerra did sit down for an interview with NBC Bay Area’s sister station, NBC Los Angeles, back in April. Watch the interview below.
